How much money would an average college philosopher make?

I would love to go into philosophy, but my parents say there is no money in that career choice. I know I should live in reality, but I can’t be a dreamer?

    Without a DREAM you’ll never accomplish anything…

Well, there isn’t really a job position just called "Philosopher" anymore. The closest you can get is as a college professor teaching philosophy. There’s a few things to keep in mind for that:

    1) You’ll probably need a PhD in Philosophy to teach it. Which means you’ll need roughly 8 years of school, at different schools. That could cost quite a bit, especially if you need student loans.
    2) Teaching, even on a college level, doesn’t usually pay well. According to the Princeton Review, there aren’t many full-time teaching positions for Philosophy professors.

My thought would be to get your Bachelors in something a bit more practical (but still something you’re interested in), and then if when you’re done with it, you still want to teach philosophy, you can get your PhD in philosophy.
