How can you understand the Bible without a human to teach you?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

In talking to many people over the years, people keep telling me that all you need is the Bible and to ask the holy spirit to help you understand the Bible. Nothing else.

Couple of problematic questions with this line of reasoning:

If you were to rely on your own understanding, would you not have many different sects teaching tons of different understandings of the Bible?

If everybody had the holy spirit guiding them, would they not all have come to the same conclusions regarding what the Bible actually teaches?

Everybody who is searching for truth of the Bible are all sincere in their search. Why do they not all believe the same thing if they all asked the holy spirit to guide them?

So, can you understand the Bible without a human to teach you?

If you go to a university to learn the Bible, is the teaching from that school lead by the holy spirit?

What is a good way to convey ideas that would help the country to Obama?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

I am aware of mailing things to Pennsylvania avenue, but that is not likely to get any results.
Just because it is a really good idea, does not mean it would be acted upon.
Example of a really good idea- a public works program that builds infrastructure AND creates some jobs. Not jobs where people are paid to do nothing, but real jobs building or creating something positive that helps many people; not only the workers with the new jobs.

Why is there a backlash against vegetarians?

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Many people criticize vegetarians, and claim it is "stupid" to not consider that many civilizations were built on the domestication of cattle. It just seems odd to me people would actually discredit vegetarianism. However, I thought vegetarianism existed just as early as meat eating? So, i guess my question is what is the best response to the common argument against vegetarians?

Is it absurd to literally apply the Constitution to situations the founding fathers could not have envisioned?

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Many people like to say they are for strict interpretation of the Constitution. Fine. However, there are many problems, issues, and situations that aren’t directly dealt with by the Constitution and/or were in fact totally inconceivable to the founding fathers.

For example, the internet. While it certainly affects interstate commerce and thus the Constitution would say that Congress has the power to regulate it, is that really what the founding fathers intended? How could we possibly know what they would have wanted or if they would have written the Constitution the same way if they had taken that into account?

Why should we assume the wisdom of a document at face value in any situation when the realities it is applied to could not have been predicted by its makers?
